Joshua - Paralegal

Can you share your educational background and how your legal career began?

At college, I completed A-levels in Politics, Psychology, and History. After college I headed to university and gained a law degree. My career here began through work experience and soon after I stepped up into a casual role as a legal assistant. A few months later and an opportunity arose for me to apply to become a paralegal and I got the job!

What does your role as a paralegal involve, and what are your main responsibilities in the legal team?

The main thing is there is plenty of variety however, the thing I am involved in most, as a paralegal, is assisting lawyers on all matters. This could be regarding property law, planning law and litigation . Our team is involved in all the projects carried out by the council with things such as buying and selling land, contracts and permitting developments. My role includes assisting with these actions and the documents involved. I have to attend court where necessary and prepare bundles for litigation (the evidence for the council's side of the dispute).

What do you enjoy most about your work environment and team dynamics in your role as a paralegal?

The variety is key for me, but also the people! Within my team and across the organisation they're all easy to work with, sociable and generally proactive. We all have the drive to do better for the community. It's very satisfying getting work done for example, sorting the preparation for a project and seeing that project come to life. Finally, the flexibility with a mix of being able to work from home and in the office due to the fact I am based in London.
